15 Minute Makes; screen free ideas – craft kits for children

Crafting with your children is a great way to create some screen-free time. It doesn’t need to take too long either – even 15 minutes away from the screen is worth aiming for.

Most children love the opportunity of making something with their own hands and being able to proudly say, “Look what I made.”

Getting everything ready before suggesting the activity to the kids is a good idea; collect scissors, paper, paint, macaroni, string –  whatever you are going to use and arrange them temptingly in bowls on the table.Arrange it as if it were a tea-party ( or a table of tapas!). The aim is to make it look enticing.

A specially designed children’s craft kit is a good idea as it has everything you need in one place. Buttonbag’s Butterflies and Bows  is a brilliant introduction to sewing and helps develop fine motor skills and hand-to-eye coordination.  Children thread the brightly coloured felt butterflies on to a ribbon using  a plastic safety needle.

Fun, fast and suitable for children aged about four and up: Ella’s mum sent us this lovely video of Ella, aged 5 explaining just how to make a butterfly necklace and we wanted to share it with you.
